Dr. Amanambu at Pax Internal Medicine Associates in Akron, Ohio, is an experienced internist who can help you understand COPD symptoms, provide an accurate diagnosis, and develop a personalized treatment plan to manage your condition and improve your respiratory health. Recognizing the Symptoms of COPD COPD often develops gradually, and early symptoms may be subtle. However, as the condition progresses, you may experience: Chronic Cough: A persistent cough that produces mucus, often worse in the morning or during exacerbations. Shortness of Breath: Difficulty breathing, especially during physical activity or exertion. Wheezing: A high-pitched whistling sound when you breathe, often more noticeable during exhalation. Chest Tightness: A feeling of pressure or constriction in your chest. Frequent Respiratory Infections: Increased susceptibility to colds, flu, and pneumonia. Fatigue: Feeling tired and lacking energy due to the extra effort required to breathe. Physical Examination: He'll listen to your lungs, check your breathing patterns, and assess your overall health. Spirometry Test: This lung function test measures how much air you can inhale and exhale and how quickly you can do so. It helps determine the severity of airflow obstruction. Other Tests: In some cases, Dr. Amanambu may order additional tests, such as chest X-rays or CT scans, to further evaluate your lungs and rule out other conditions. COPD Relief and Treatment: Managing Your Condition While there's no cure for COPD, various treatments help manage symptoms, slow disease progression, and improve your quality of life. Dr. Amanambu develops a personalized treatment plan based on your specific needs and the severity of your condition. Smoking Cessation: If you smoke, quitting is the most crucial step in managing COPD. Dr. Amanambu provides resources and support to help you quit successfully. Medications: Various medications, including bronchodilators and inhaled steroids, help open your airways and reduce inflammation. Pulmonary Rehabilitation: This program combines exercise, education, and support to improve your breathing and overall well-being. Oxygen Therapy: If your blood oxygen levels are low, supplemental oxygen helps you breathe easier and improve your quality of life.
