WHAT IS HYPERTENSION?
Hypertension or high blood pressure is the elevated reading of your systolic pressure (top) and diastolic pressure (bottom). A normal reading would show a systolic reading of less than 120 and a diastolic reading of less than 80. When those numbers are elevated to or above 130 (systolic) and at or above 80 (diastolic), the patient is considered to have hypertension.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS?
There are multiple risk factors associated with high blood pressure. Genetics are one of the common risk factors. Simply getting older can raise the risk of hypertension. Consuming alcohol and smoking regularly can also increase your risk of developing hypertension. Individuals who do not get ample physical activity and who do not eat a healthy diet are also at greater risk.
HOW IS IT TREATED?
The treatment for hypertension is extremely individualized. Dr. Amanambu considers a patient’s family and genetic situation, their current and past medical history, and their physiological issues prior to determining the best method of treatment. There may be recommendations of additional physical activity, a reduced sodium/heart healthy diet, getting optimal amounts of sleep each night, maintaining or losing weight, and limiting alcohol and smoking. If needed, prescription medication is advised.
