Insulin-Related Issues
Type 2 diabetes generally results from two key problems: when the pancreas becomes unable to produce enough insulin, and when cells in the muscles, fat, and liver become more resistant to insulin. Insulin is the hormone that helps regulate blood sugar, and these abnormalities will lead to unhealthy increases in blood glucose levels.
Risk Factors For Type 2 Diabetes
There are several known risk factors that can increase the likelihood of developing these insulin-related issues. First and foremost is being overweight or obese, particularly if your body primarily stores fat in the abdomen. Being physically inactive also increases the risk. Low levels of HDL cholesterol and high triglyceride levels are another known risk factor. The risk for type 2 diabetes also increases with age, as well as if you have a family history of the disease.
If you’re at risk for type 2 diabetes, quality preventative care and key lifestyle changes are essential for maintaining your health. Dr. Chimezie Amanambu and the staff at Pax Medical Associates will help you develop a personalized health plan based on your unique needs so you can prevent or better manage type 2 diabetes.
